Character History:
Pearl came from an alien gem world, in which she refers to as "Homeworld". She was one of the few hundreds of Pearls, a manufactured Gem. She, along with other Pearls were bred to be the perfect servant to higher ranking Gems on Homeworld. They are not seen as true Gems, due to their servant-like nature. It is unheard of, for a Pearl to act on her own accord.
A few thousand years after her creation, Pearl broke away from Homeworld. She was convinced to thanks to another Gem named Rose Quartz. Rose was so fascinated by Earth and it's customs. Pearl wanted to protect the planet from being harvested by Homeworld, who wanted to to create more soldier Gems. Rose and Pearl wanted to save Earth from being devoid of all organic life. It was during this time that she studied swordsmanship and how to properly use a spear in combat, since her gemstone's weapon is a unique spear.
As she studied, she took a liking to the way of the knight, and how they would protect their charges' with their own lives. Through out many battles against Homeworld Gems, Pearl sacrificed herself for Rose, by "poofing". This is when a Gem is hurt so badly, their projected physical form disappears, and they revert back to their gemstone, to recover. It takes a matter of hours, and sometimes weeks for a Gem to reform, but Pearl found herself reforming in a matter of seconds to try and protect her fearless leader. She did this many times, despite the fact of how capable of a fighter Rose actually was.
Eventually, the fighting had caused Homeworld to fall back, leaving Earth under the protection of the now formed "Crystal Gems", which consisted of Rose, Pearl, a fusion named Garnet (made up of Ruby and Sapphire), and later on, Amethyst joined their ranks. As they settled down in Beach City, they created their own homebase of sorts, which was a temple, in the rock face of a cliff, which was hidden behind the city. The Gems never really interacted directly with humans, and had much to learn about their cultures and customs. During this time, Rose had become fond of a human named Greg Universe. Pearl was adverse to this idea of a human and a Gem being in a relationship, but she had no word in the matter despite her connection with Rose Quartz.
After a few years, Rose decided to make a drastic decision. She and Greg created a child, but in order to do so, Rose had to give up her physical form in order to create their son. Steven. The Crystal Gems knew this was her choice, and took Steven in with no hesitation. He grew up mostly under the watchful eye of the Crystal Gems. Pearl was, and still is, very protective of him, teaching Steven about the powers of his Gem, similar to ones in which his mother had. She even tried to teach Steven how to sword fight, only to have a mishap. Her own hologram stabbed her through the stomach, causing her to "poof" for the first time in front of Steven. Thankfully, two weeks later, Pearl was able to reform, unknown about the events that had happened while she was in gemstone form.
Pearl exposed very little about her past to Steven. However, one day, when she had discovered Rose's scabbard for her saber, more of Pearl's past was exposed. She showed Steven a prominent memory of her's, of his mother. Rose had explained to Pearl, when they were preparing to fight against Homeworld, that they could never go back home after their fight. As long as she was there with Rose, nothing else mattered to Pearl. Even after over 5,000 years, Pearl still held Rose's ideals, beliefs, and memory close to her heart.
While they raised Steven, Pearl and the other Gems ran into some obstacles. Gems were created, never born, so they had no real experience with raising an offspring of any sort. All Gems were created "big and strong", and they were never infants themselves. However, Steven knew that his surrogate family was only trying to do their best for him. They protected him at sign of danger. Even when he was kidnapped, for being mistaken as a "sneeple" (snake person). The Crystal Gems charged right in to confront the human who had kidnapped him.
Even though Rose had sacrificed herself in order to make half of Steven, Pearl had grown to respect Greg. While she isn't very close to him, due to his messy nature, Pearl has no outward negative feelings towards him. She could be seen fixing his van in many instances. Then again, she has also used bits and parts of his van to create a spaceship to go up into space with Steven. She had no real regard to Greg's feelings on the matter, taking his son into space. Thanks to Steven, she saw the errors of her ways, despite desperately wanting to return to outerspace. They returned back to Earth's surface safely.
When seeking out a Homeworld Gem, Peridot, on earth, Pearl and the crystal Gems were presented with an obstacle. Peridot was trying to contact Homeworld through a communication hub, which was created back whem Homeworld first landed on Earth, restructured to work once more. Pearl and Garnet decided to form Sardonyx in a fusion. They successfully destroyed the hub, but a few days later, it was recreated. Again, they fused to destroy it, and mysteriously, it was built once again. When they returned to the hub, Steven and Amethyst revealed that Pearl had been rebuilding the communication hub (after the first time it was rebuilt), to have an excuse to form Sardonyx with Garnet. Outraged by Pearl's deceit, tension grew within the group.
A good week passed before the Crystal Gems rush out to subdue her, and as they do, Pearl tried her best to show Garnet that she was capable of capturing Peridot. To make up for her past mistake with Garnet. However, all of her attempts only hindered the group, causing setbacks. While trying to capture the Homeworld Gem, Pearl and Garnet were trapped. Walls were closing in on all sides of the both of them and it looked like they were going to be crushed. In their time of peril, the Gem broke down, apologizing profusely to Garnet. Pearl exclaimed that she felt so weak when she wasn't fused. She wanted to feel complete. She did not think highly of herself, unless someone told her what to do. Pearl strived for validation, and to have some sense of worth to someone. Thankfully, Garnet was able to talk her out of her hole of low self esteem. Encouraging her to be her own Gem. And with that, they were able to fuse and break out of the trap as Sardonyx.
They were able to chase after Peridot once more, only to have her barely escape from the Crystal Gems. And thus, after that day, Pearl is whisked to Wonderland.
Abilities/Special Powers:
Pearl, being a Gem, is faster, stronger, and has higher durability than the normal human being. All Gems have these abilities, along with some shape shifting abilities. Gems can turn into objects, transform body parts, and other beings at will. In canon, Pearl has yet to transform, but it is said that she does have the ability to shape shift.
Pearl, in particular, can summon her weapon from her gem in her forehead. A long staff with a blade near the end of it. It can also be in a shorter form of a wand. She can also summon rapiers, which is what she uses to train with her holograms.
Speaking of holograms! Pearl can create images of herself, along with other beings and objects with her gem. This helps when she's training on her own, or even when it comes to laying out plans in a physical plane, as explained previously. These holograms can take on a slightly physical form, being able to take up actual objects and wielding them. Another perk to being a Gem is that they can change their clothes at will.
There is always a draw back to such great power, however. Whenever her gem becomes cracked, Pearl could possibly fall ill, or her body may react irregularly. Amethyst, when her gem cracked, started to literally fall apart in front of her friends, unravelling and even started to talk backwards. This also has yet to happen to Pearl, but that's open for interpretation.
There was also a time in which Pearl was mortally wounded, having been stabbed through the stomach unexpectedly. She reverted back into her gem form, for nearly two weeks while her body worked in order to regenerate. In canon, it is shown that Pearl can also store items within her gem. Examples being her spear and even "caution" tape.
Gems can also fuse together to create one being. So far in Canon, she has fused with Amethyst, Garnet, and Rose Quartz. It's often frowned upon for different Gems to fuse. Usually Gems within the same family (ie: Quartzes, Amethysts, etc) fuse with one another.
Pearl can also "bubble" objects. These bubbles can hold small objects, but Gems usually use it to bubble other Gems. Whatever is inside it cannot break out of the bubble unless it is "unbubbled" by the Gem that originally made it. But! It has been shown, in canon, that Steven can pop other bubbles.
Third-Person Sample:
Pearl sat in her newly found room. Her assigned room apparently. She could hear the muttering of strange and new voices from the other sides of the wall surrounding her. The Gem swallowed thickly. Wonderland was strange enough, but if there were other people here, how would they react to someone like her? A sentient alien rock from space? She had grown so used to humans and how they lived, she wasn't sure what to make of these new beings here.
Her hands in her lap twiddled their thumbs together as she sat uncomfortably on the bed supplied to her. As she thought about it, maybe this wouldn't be too bad. They were all here against their own will as well. Not that it was a bad thing, but it was something they all shared in common with her. Perhaps she'd be able to get some more information, now that the new setting around her had settled within her mind. This was her new refuge. Until there was a way out of course. Then she could get back to earth, and back to finding Peridot.
Pearl's hands curled in on themselves, just above her knees, into loose fists as her lips tightened into a thin line. She needed to get some proper answers. She had to get home. Steven could be in trouble, and here she was sitting on her hands, wondering about the 'what ifs' within this strange new world. Pearl was so used to being so full of facts, and being in the know, she had let her fear get the best of her. This world was going to be topsy turvy for her whether she liked it or not.
She lightly pounded the side of her fists into her knees, snapping herself out of her daze. Pushing herself up to her feet, she felt her chest swell with confidence by inhaling through her nostrils. Pale blue eyes glanced over to the door as she padded up to it with her ballet shoes. With delicate pale fingers, she reached out, turning the door knob.
First-Person Sample:
[Okay she can do this! She clears her throat before speaking.]
Greetings fellow inhabitants of Wonderland! I'm Pearl, a member of the Crystal Gems. I was hoping that maybe some of you have my teammates. Three of them. Or, at least, one of them.
[She gestures with her hand, lifting it high over her head, before making a square shape with her hands.] One is very tall with... square like hair. Her name is Garnet, and she has two gems in her palms.
[Pearl moves to make a 'short' motion with her hand next.] And Amethyst, a purple Gem with, well, a gemstone in her chest. And a little boy named Steven. Wears an iconic red shirt with a yellow star in the center. If anyone has seen anyone matching those descriptions, please let me know! I'm very worried about them.
We were on a very important mission back home. [Pearl pauses and taps her chin, thinking aloud.] Maybe they came here as well, just in a different area?
[The Gem rubs at her arms.]
It's hopeful thinking at the very least.
[And she perks up, looking back at the camera as she snaps out of her thoughts. She grins sheepishly.]
Any information would be helpful! Thank you very much!
